SUAAHARA Second Stage Introduction

Suahara-2, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), aims to improve the nutritional status of more than 1.5 million women and children under the age of two in Nepal as part of the second series of the Suahara programme implemented for five years by 2021 in partnership with the Government of Nepal and various national and international organizations. Suahara-2 is running its various programs in 42 rural districts of Nepal. In particular, Suahara, which works directly for the nutrition of women and children under the age of two, also works with adolescents, women’s health volunteers and health workers, and local government agencies. The common objective of all these programs and strategies is to improve the nutritional status of mothers and children in Nepal. The programme will work with a comprehensive and multi-sectoral strategy in the areas of maternal, child and child health services including drinking water and sanitation, household food, family planning.

In order to improve the nutritional status of women and children below two years of age, suahar has been dividing the programs into results as follows:
  • Improve the household’s nutrition and health habits.
  • Increase the consumption rate of quality nutrition and health services among women and children.
  • Improve access to nutritious foods including food diversity for women and children.
  • Expand the multi-sectoral nutrition plan by strengthening good governance at the local level.
Behavioral Changes Due to SUAAHARA Project
  • Diversify the diet of adolescent girls, pregnant and mothers under two years of age, increase the consumption of eggs and meat.
  • Pregnant women should go to the health facility at least four times and get their pregnancy checked.
  • Pregnant women should take 180 iron pills during the pregnancy period.
  • Use appropriate modern family planning tools.
  • Diversify your child’s diet and increase the consumption of eggs, meat and iron-rich foods.
  • Feed the sick child more or more food.
  • When the child is suffering from diarrhea, give them rehydrated broth as well as zinc tablets.
  • Let the baby be fully breastfed for 6 months.
  • Let’s eat only after purifying the water.
  • Wash your hands in risky situations.
